We’ll land at Keflavik airport at 6:30 AM and during a group orientation pick up our rental cars, detailed itineraries, maps and loaner cell phones.
Leaving the airport we’ll pass through an ancient landscape of seaside lava floes punctuated with plumes of steam rising from natural geothermal vents on the Reykajannes Peninsula. We’ll bypass Reykjavik’s suburbs for now, headed instead towards Iceland’s awe-inspiring South Coast. Soon we’ll enjoy a breakfast of Icelandic pancakes, smoked salmon sandwiches and strong coffee.
Along the way we’ll encounter massive seaside waterfalls close-up and even walk behind one!
“Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water spill over the top of a cliff, the air thick with mist and rainbows. Its massive beauty invites you to walk as close as you dare, then hike up its side. At the top, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the countryside and a whole new perspective on the falls. Behind, you'll discover a river with banks that stretch to infinity. How many places like this are left in the world, where as far as you can see in any direction, nothing has been ruined? The landscape is exactly as nature intended, there for you to explore like the first settlers lucky enough to have stumbled upon it.”

In the afternoon we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and explore the black sand beaches, sea caves, sea stacks and natural basalt stone sea arches of the South Coast. A lighthouse perched on high sea cliffs, with all its panoramic views, makes a perfect location for reflection before continuing on to some of the most massive, expansive landscape of the journey.

Endless fields of purple lupines enhance the vast landscapes along the way.

In the evening we’ll have dinner and sleep in a luxurious, modern hotel set in desolate isolation on the south coast and then fall asleep quickly for so much wonder and jet lag.
